Mount Batur is an active volcano in Kintamani, in the north-east of the island. The classic way to see the sunrise is a two-hour hike to the summit; this tour is the alternative for people who want the same dawn view without the climb. You are driven up to a viewpoint on the caldera rim in an open 4WD jeep, watch the sun come up behind Mount Agung and the lake, have breakfast, and then drive across the black lava fields left by the 1963 and later eruptions before heading back.
The catch is the start time. The jeeps leave basecamp at about 04:30, and basecamp is two hours from Kuta, Seminyak or Nusa Dua and about an hour from Ubud, so your hotel pickup is in the small hours. It is cold on the rim before dawn, often around 12 to 15 degrees with wind, and the road up is rough. Once the sun is up it warms quickly and the lava fields are open, dusty and dramatic.
It suits families with children, older travelers and anyone who wants the view but not the hike. The jeep is private to your group. Note the minimum of three guests for this package; couples can still book but should ask Dewa about the price for two.
Night pickup
From Kuta, Seminyak, Canggu or Nusa Dua expect a pickup roughly two hours before the basecamp time; from Ubud about an hour before. Hotel transfer depends on your area. Dewa confirms the exact time on WhatsApp.

About an hour up the rough track in the dark. Hold on; it is bumpy and the jeep is open-sided.

Arrive before first light. Sunrise is around 06:00 to 06:15 depending on the month, with Mount Agung, Lake Batur and, on clear days, Lombok's Rinjani on the horizon.

Boxed breakfast with a banana sandwich, hot drinks and mineral water while the light changes on the crater.

Drive out across the lava fields at the foot of the cone: black rock, volcanic sand and photo stops with the jeep.

Back down the track with the valley in daylight.
