This is the long day out. North Bali's waterfalls sit on the far side of the central mountains, so from Kuta, Seminyak or Nusa Dua you are looking at roughly two and a half to three hours in the car each way; from Ubud it is closer to two. Dewa drives the Bedugul road over the pass, past the lakes, and drops down towards Singaraja. The drive is part of the day: rice terraces, strawberry stalls, monkeys at the roadside near the Twin Lakes, and a noticeable drop in temperature as you climb.

The three stops are ordered so the easy ones come first. The Twin Lake viewpoint at Wanagiri is a short roadside stop. Banyumala is a fifteen-to-twenty-minute walk down a steep path to a wide pool you can swim in. Sekumpul is the serious one: several hundred concrete steps, a short river crossing or two, and a climb back out that most people find harder than the way down. Allow two to two and a half hours there, and expect to get wet.

It suits anyone who is happy walking for a couple of hours on uneven, sometimes slippery ground and does not mind a long drive. It is not the best choice for travelers with knee problems, for very young children who need carrying, or for anyone with a flight later that day.
